How to support a friend or family member who’s struggling with their mental health-By Sahaj Kaur Kohli
-DO listen and validate-Be curious about what your friend is struggling with and how it’s impacting them.
-DO ask what they need from you-Instead of making assumptions about what would be helpful to your loved one, ask them directly: “How can I support you?”
-DO offer to help with everyday tasks
-DO celebrate their wins, including the small ones
-DO check in with them regularly
-DON’T compare their experience to others-Everyone experiences their mental health struggles and mental health illnesses differently.
-DON’T use stigmatizing language
-DON’T take their behavior personally
-DON’T be confrontational or try to control the situation
-DON’T get discouraged
-DON’T burn yourself out trying to support your loved one
-DON’T try to fix them
-DON’T avoid the feelings that come up for you
